Steering Column Repair: steering wheel vibration, 2004 chevy malibu, wheel vibration

Question
I have a 2004 Chevy Malibu with about 45700 miles.  Lately, when my car is in idle or in reverse, my steering wheel is vibrating (sometimes harder than other times).  When the car is moving in drive the vibration goes away.  Any ideas?  Approximate cost?

Answer
Hello Karen,
I'm sorry I cannot diagnose the problem with your description. There are several reasons the steering will vibrate at low/no speed. The main problem I see is an engine that is idling too low.
This is one of those questions where I have to say simply take the vehicle to a reputable mechanic and show them exactly what you are feeling. They can give you a better idea of the problem and possible fixes.
Hope that helps some.
Have a great day!
