Steering Column Repair: 97 Tahoe 21600985 switch replacement, turn signal switch, dash mount

Question
It looks like the switch would be accessible if I can get the top plastic cover off. Will I still need to remove the lockplate for some reason?

Question -
I removed the airbag and steering wheel but need help on further disassembly to access the switch. How does the "clamshell" cover come apart? Do I need any special tools?

Answer -
Hello Phil,
Yes you will need a special tool to get behind the lockplate. Access to the cover screws can either be from the front, under the turn signal switch, or from behind, which will require you to drop the column from the dash mount.
Hope that helps,

Answer
Hello Phil,
I am almost certain there is a screw behind the lockplate that holds the cover. If it isn't behind the lockplate, it's on the opposite side toward the floor which would require you to remove the column mount bolts.
Hope that helps,
Have a great day!
