Steering Column Repair: 1991 K5 Blazer steering column shroud, turn signal switch, k5 blazer

Question
Hi Jay.  My wiper switch went south.  So I picked up a new wiper and turn signal switch and proceede to disasemble the steering column.  I got everything done including getting the key tumbler unit out, but the shroud won't slip off the column so I can access the wiper switch.  I see the ignition switch rod running on the rack and pinion inside the key switch hole and when I pull the shroud back, it stops when the ignition switch rod gets to the end of the gear cuts.  How do I get that dang thing off.  Thanx.  ~dick

Answer
Hello Dick,
You need to remove the spring holding the lock pin for the steering wheel lock plate (one screw). This will give you enough room on the rack when pulling it out to disengage the sector gear to pull the rack away from its saddle. You can also try to pull slightly outward (toward the door) at the lower end of the shroud to free the ignition rod from the rack. If both of these methods fail, try sliding the sector gear off (opposite the key lock) by placing a screwdriver between it and the column bowl. Don't pry too hard as it can break. Some styles have a pin holding them.

I hope I've helped. Let me know if I can be of further assistance.
Have a great day!
-Jay
