Steering Column Repair: cruise contol switch, cruise contol, blown fuse

Question
2002 Kia sportage cruise contol switch on steering wheel needs to be replaced. How to do it?

Answer
The cruise control switch itself is not difficult to replace. The first thing you must always do is completely disconnect the battery so that you do not deploy the airbag accidently. This could be a very dangerous situtation. After the battery has been disconnected, remove the screws that are holding the airbag/horn assembly. They are located on the back side of the steering wheel. Once you pull the airbag assembly away from the steering wheel, you should be able to access the tabs holding the cruise switch in place.

I want to clarify that the style of switch I am talking about is located in the right "loop" of the steering wheel. I've not seen too many switches simply fail on their own, due to their being protected in the "loop" of the wheel. Most often the case has been a blown fuse or fuses. Be sure to check ALL the fuses under the dash and under the hood as not always will there be only be a single fuse to replace. And don't simply go by the owners manual and look at the "CC" or "Acc" fuses because it's quite possible that 2 fuses could blow at once.

There is also a ringed contact just below the steering wheel on the steering shaft. You must remove the steering wheel to get to it. This part must make contact for the horn and also for the cruise control. The part is made of plastic with a contact plate made of brass attached. I have seen these plastic pieces fail due to dry conditions. If that is the case you can replace the contact assembly and be on your cruising way.

I hope that helps. If you need further assistance please feel free to contact me again. I appreciate any and all comments and feedback.

Have a great day!
