Steering Column Repair: replace/repair steering column, ford steering column, plastic components

Question
I have a 95 F-250 7.3 with tilt steering.  for quite a while it would have clicking or spring noises when turning off and on.  Then within 2 days it suddenly got way loose and you might compare it to an airplane yoke.  The wheel itself is tight on the assembly, but after that it is very loose and sloppy.  1) is it dangerous to drive  2) how would i replace it with a used column?  Thank you.

Answer
Hi Kevin:
It sounds like the up[per bearings have gone bad on your column.  Regardless of whether it's tilt or not, the upper housing and bearings are the same.  If it's not fixed soon, you will soon do more damage to the plastic components being jostled around without support (airbag clockspring, horn contact, cruise control spring contacts, etc)

We have recently uploaded pages and a description of how to rebuild the upper portion of a Ford steering column.  They are broken down into step by step detailed instructions on our website. Although the example is for a 2000 Mustang, the column is identical to yours (tilt and non tilt use the same housing)

I hope these instructions help you.  If not, please contact me again for more information.
Lastly, if you need parts to repair this column simply email us on our "Contact Us / Order Parts" page and we will get back in touch with you personally

Good luck
