Steering Column Repair: 1992 camaro column, 1992 camaro rs, infinite resistance

Question
Well I own a 1992 Camaro rs and it has the vats. well the other nite someone broke into my car and tried to steal it. I do not think they knew the car has vats because they stripped the top knucle of the column ya know above the tilt. They tried to access the ignition switch and they did but in doing so they managed to cut all the blinkers, air bag ,hazzard, and vats and a few other items well. I need to know how I can fix it. I already pulled the wheel and went to the bone yard and pulled all new parts. But for some reason i bought a new igniton from pepboys it has the orage jacket and the 2 white wires so I connect to the vats at the bottom of the column. But I dont get anything turning on. The only thing that happens is the radio and dash lights come on and then the water temp goes up when turning the key? I checked the new ignition with my meter and it says the new key has infinite resistance which means is should work right? Or do i need to just solder in a resistor that matches the vats system. Ya Know one of the 15 valuse. And if so how do I know which one to get? The only thing I didnt hook up yet is there is a green wire and a tan/white wire that goes to the ignion area but has no hook ups as far as i can tell. But ont he orinal part it was attached to the yellow turn signal bracket but it goes in the igniton area not in the blinker area? Could that be the problem? What are those wires? I cant find a diagram that explains. Please Help!

Thanks J

Answer
Hi J,
I'm sorry to hear of your recent incident with the criminal. I don't have a schematic for your particular vehicle at this moment, so I can't offer you much help with your problem. My suspicion is that not all the necessary wires are connected properly. GM did have some variations between years so I can't be for certain the parts you have are interchangable.

Always be certain that you do not deploy the air bag accidently. Disconnect the battery whenever you work on any part of the column (or dash for that matter). You could be seriously injured, and fortunately for the bandit, he wasn't at the time of the crime.

I might possibly have the schematic in hard copy at another location, but I won't be there until Sunday. If you can't wait until then, you could try your local library. Many libraries have the schematics in their Chiltons manuals, or you could buy one from the local parts store. Some libraries even have them available electronically, but you need an access card from the library. Without a diagram you're fishing with no bait.

I apologize that this is the best I can do for you at this point in time. If you've had no luck from any of our other experts by Sunday, please feel free to reply to my message to remind me to get the diagram to you.

Have a great day!
