Steering Column Repair: mid 70S G.M. van tilt steering column, steering wheel puller, tilt mechanism

Question
How do you replace the shift coller in a mid 70's G.M. van tilt steering column?. Can you remove the inner shaft from the outer tube with out taking the tilt mechanism apart?

Answer
Hi,

To replace the lower bowl if you have not done it is quite a job. The steering column has to be totally disassembled and requires specialty tools. A steering wheel puller and pivot pin tool are required. You should have the ignition lock in the dash so that is one less thing to screw around with, but it is not an easy project for an amatuer. In fact, these columns required extra care with disassembly and I am real glad they are not made anymore.

As for the shaft, it needs to be disassembled.

Good luck!

I am wondering though why you have to change the lower bowl.
