Steering Column Repair: 1999 Jeep Cherokee Sport steering Jerky upon return., jeep cherokee sport, jeep cherokee

Question
My jeep is very jerky when turning or upon return after making a turn. This was happening last summer and the dealership replaced power steering unit, now after six months it is doing the jerky thing again.  About a month ago I had the tires rotated and balanced, and today I had that all checked out once again, there is no problems with the balance etc.  Any ideas what could be the problem.  I have an appointment Monday with the dealership, but any suggestions from you would be greatly appreciated.  I get talked down to a lot since I'm a woman, it's quite annoying.
Thank You, Corinne

Answer
Hi,

As you know it is impossible for me to make a positive diagnoses without seeing the vehicle however; from what you describe it sounds like a loose power steering belt, a bad steering unit or a contaminated steering unit. Balancing would have no effect on this type of problem. Tire balancing is for vibration when the vehicle is driving down the road and you get a shimmy.
