Steering Column Repair: 77 Trans Am Steering Hub Replacement, pontiac firebird, chevrolet truck

Question
I have a 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am that is having the formula style steering wheel restored.  I would like to remove and replace the Steering Hub or Collar.  However, I cannot tell how to physically take it off the steering column.  Aside from buying a repair and maintenance manual for instructions on how to do it, can you describe to me what the process is to go about removing the old hub and reinstalling a new hub?  Is it something that the average do-it-yourself person can do or does it require that I take the car to a certified mechanic or shop?  Please advise.

Many Thanks - Gary Drew

Answer
Hi Gary:

the hub and steering wheel should be taken off together and then separated after they are off the vehicle.  However, if yo have a steering wheel puller, you should be able to simply apply that tool and remove he hub alone as well.
We have recently uploaded some videos on our company website to give you first hand viewing of how to remove, disassemble, and reassemble the loose tilt column you are talking about. They are broken down into step by step 2-3 minute detailed videos with instructions. Although the videos are for a Chevrolet truck, the column is very similar to yours.
