Steering Column Repair: ignition lock replacement, steering wheel puller, 1986 buick regal

Question
How do I remove and replace the ignition lock on a 1986 Buick Regal with Tilt steering wheel?  Key no longer works and ignition lock no longer turns.  Key was forced out in the accessory position.

Answer
Hi,

You may have more problems than just the ignition lock. The rack was common to break in this steering column.
The rack is attached to the ignition actuator rod that engages the electrical ignition switch.
In order to change the ignition lock the steering wheel must be removed.
Disconnect the battery at the negative cable. Center the steering wheel. Remove the attaching bolts for the air bag. Disconnect the electrical connections. Try to rent a steering wheel puller at the parts store. Do not use a hammer on the shaft to remove the steering wheel. Note where the notches are for the steering wheel and upper shaft so you put the wheel on right during assembly.
Remove retainer on shaft with awl if still attached. Remove steering wheel nut. Remove steering wheel. Use rented lock plate compressor to remove clock spring snap ring. Remove clock spring and wave washer. Reinstall compressor and remove lock plate spring. Remove cancel cam and t/s screws. Remove 4 way flasher (Small Phillips and t/s pivot. Remove key buzzer by lock. Remove #20 torx ignition cylinder screw.  Remove lock. Pull out the spring clip from key buzzer with needle nose. On installation look into hole in cover for lock cylinder. Press up on tab with no key in the lock in the LOCKED position so that when you squeeze the retainer and key buzzer it fits into the hole. Reinstall opposite way. Make sure when installing lock plate that broach (missing tooth) is lined up with shaft. Lock plate only fits one way.
If you have never done this, I would recommend calling a local automotive locksmith. You may find more problems in which the car needs to go to a garage for service.
