Steering Column Repair: 1989 Buick Century Wagon Steering column, steering wheel lock, pivot pins

Question
My son is trying to repair the steering wheel on his station wagon. The steering column is so loose, that now he can't even start the car. He can't find any bolts, etc. to remove the column's cover. Can you give us any ideas on how to remove the cover? Thanks!

Answer
Hi,

If you have never repaired this style of stee5ring column, you really do not want to try.
There are specialty tools for removing the steering wheel, lock plate and pivot pins.
I just did one of these the other day. There are 4 bolts at the bottom of the column internally that need to be tighten. The column gets loose when it is used for getting in and out of the vehicle.
You can email me at robo14@aol.com for instructions, but these can be tricky. There may also be damage to the internal components if it is severly loose.
You may want to put a junkyard column in. To do what you are considering for a professional takes a couple of hours. I am afraid that if you try to attempt to fix it, you will get frustrated when you cannot get it back together.
