Subaru Repair: 2004 Subaru Forester 2.5 XT-, subaru forester, 2004 subaru forester

Question
My 2004 Subaru Forester 2.5 XT shakes on the highway.  A few months ago I noticed the car had a slight wobble. I could not tell if the wobble was from the engine; like in the case of dirty plugs, worn wires or bad timing or if the wobbling was from the front end; like in the case of severally out of balance or worn tires.

Now the car seems to shake violently when I accelerate over 60 mph. The problem worsens when driving longer then 20 minutes or so but, at the same time, I have seen it get better when accelerating past 80-mph. I still cannot tell if the wobble is from the engine or the drive train. One thing for sure is that it is getting worse!

I have new tires and a recent tune-up and timing belt.

The Subaru dealership performed an engine diagnostic and cleaned the fuel system. The mechanic found nothing wrong with the engine. He too felt the wobble / shacking on a test drive, but cannot identify the problem.

Answer
Joe,

There isn't any one thing I can suggest you check or have checked.  If the problem can be duplicated by the Dealer it can be fixed.  Things that need to be checked would be the front drive axles, wheel balance, tire out of round, radial tire runout, wheel bearings, transmission shudder and the list kind of goes on from there.
