Question
I have 150K on my car.  For the last six months my car has been making a very unusual noise.  At first it sounded like it was coming from behind the dash board until the weather cooled and I heard it with the windows down.  The higher the speed the louder the noise.  The sound is similar to smacking 2 stones together, a high pitched "chirp".  It does not always happen but when it does it happens every minute or so and continues for about 15 minutes until is stops.  My mechanic could not find any problem and his suggestion was to just wait until something breaks.  Maybe unrelated I have had to replace the cv joints frequently and thought that might be the culprit.  the noise continued after last replacement.

Answer
Thomas,

Trying to help you out with a noise over the net is a tricky thing, there are I am afraid to say so many typical Subaru noises its hard to point you in the right direction with out hearing the noise myself.

I half suspect a hub or wheel bearing, but there are also so many there possibilities, if the noise can be heard by someone local to you who is familiar with Subaru than that may be the best way to go to get to the bottom of it BEFORE something breaks.
