Subaru Repair: installing a japanese import engine 1999 Outback, import engine, japanese engine

Question
A family member was recently driving my 99 Outback with 140K miles and
did some major damage to the engine. Overheated; lost power and now has
loud knocking noise. I assumed the engine was gone after talking to several
mechanics and purchased a import for 1000 bucks. Looking to install this
doing a basic r and r with all the original parts that are in good shape, It is a
dual OH Cam 2.5 long block. From what I know the engine has up to 60K
mileage on it. What do you know about these engines coming out of Japan. I
have heard you need to change over the intake manifold because of the
difference in emissions. I also heard there may be a problem with the "epr"
port? Not sure what that is but someone mentioned some of the Japanese
engine don't have these and our do. Would you replace the timing belt and
cam seals while the newer engine is out of the car or just put it in the way it
is. I have heard it isn't too bad of good but wondering if it may be more work
than it is worth. I am the single owner of this car but I was trying to sell it at
the time the engine problem happened. My wife is ready to donate it and rid
ourselves but now I own a 1000 dollar engine as well. I am mechanically
inclined but have not taken on a job like this. Do you recommend? Thanks

Answer
The block is probably the same. You may need to replace the intake. The EGR is on the back side of the intake manifold on the drivers side, with a tube going down to the left cylinder head. You will need to make sure there is a port on the new engine to connect the tube. I would replace the t-belt and seals while the engine is out, much easier. Look everything over carefully.
