Subaru Repair: 1997/8 Subaru Forester check engine light/speedometer wont work HELP!!!!, subaru forester, sensor control

Question
Today i was driving home from school and i noticed that my speedometer
wasn't working. The other gadgets were working fin, gas, Rpm and Temp. All
worked fine. I went home and later i had to go to practice and it still wasn't
working. I was on the highway and my check engine light came on. So the
check engine light and the speedometer wasn't working. What is wrong with
my forester. it has 187,000 almost 189,000 miles on it. Manual transmission.
Should i get the oil changed on it because the light keeps coming on once in
a while and i just go it changed. Please feel free to help and ask questions.
Thanks.

Answer
The speed sensor # 1 has most likely failed. It is located top of the transmission /differential on the passenger side. The check engine light has zero to do with oil.It comes on when the ECM sees a problem with a sensor, control or condition. Its most likely on now as a result of the speed sensor problem.
