Subaru Repair: Keep it or trade it?, timing belt pulleys, wheel bearings

Question
I have a 1999 Forester L that so far has had three wheel bearings replaced (same right rear wheel), had the dealer tighten the fifth gear/rear retaining bolt on the main trans shaft, while he was in there, had him replace clutch and cl. master cylinder, and since about 50K (now 82) a worsening oil leak that dealer says is the crank seal.  While he's in there, I'll have him replace the timing belt and whatever--IF I decide to keep this car.

I love my Subaru, but are these sorts of problems pervasive?  Could I count on a new Subaru doing the same sort of thing?  If I fix the crank seal and the other stuff, would the car last another 50K or so?

Should I buy a new Subaru?  Or a Golf TDI I've had my eye on?

Answer
Keep that Subaru or at least a Subaru!  I honestly would not own a Volkswagen, too may problems, hard to repair, high dollar to maintain and repair. Well unless you are going to buy a new Volkswagen, I would sell before the warranty runs out.  When you replace the crank seal, also do the cam seals, the water pump, the oil pump, the timing belt, and timing belt tensioner.  Also have them check for worn timing belt pulleys and replace as necessary.  I have seen Subarus with 250,000 miles and still going strong!  As for the right rear wheel bearing I have the same problem in my shop.  It always seems to be the right rear bearing.  Make sure you are using Genuine Subaru Parts, wheel bearing, and the seals, that's the only advice i have on that.  The best thing you can do with a used or new Subaru is maintain it, I would go by the owners manual. These cars are great, and have a long service lift if taken care of.  Hope I could help you!!
