Subaru Repair: Subaru accelerating rough and hesitating, subaru impraza, overhead cams

Question
Hey, I have a 2000 subaru impraza 2.5rs sedan with 120,000 miles It was running fine until i ran the car until almost and empty tank, thats when i started noticing my car lacking power when accelerating and like sticking usually between 0 and 3 thousand rpms, if i push it when it sticks i hear a poping noise. I thought maybe it was the gas and fuel filter, but i replaced the fuel filter and put in a bottle of fuel treatment and its def not getting any better. I replaced the spark plugs 30,000 miles ago, and i usually run regular gas, until today, any ideas?

Answer
Since it is and RS, is it a 2.5l double or single overhead cam engine? Double overhead cams should not need spark plugs until 60,000 miles if the right ones were put in it 30,000 miles ago. If it is a single overhead cam, then it is time for plugs. I recommend sticking with the original NGK plugs that came in the car. NGK plugs are available at the dealer and most parts stores. Also, if it didn't come with platinum, don't put platinum in it. It doesn't always cause problems, but when we are trying to get to the bottom of a hard problem, it is easier when we know the plugs ardent the problem.

Is the check engine light on? If so, the code that is stored will be allot of help getting to the cause of your concern. If not, then you probably need a tech to drive it. Could be you got some bad gas out of the bottom of the tank, but Subaru's fuel tank and pump design is such that you usually cannot get the last gallon or two off the bottom of the tank. So, most likely, you have a sensor issue.

Not sure I am much help on this one. Try back if you can with more details.

Good luck.
