Subaru Repair: Outback coolant leak, outback wagon, coolant leak

Question
Frank,

I have a 2001 4 cyl Outback wagon, auto with 51000 miles.  I found a lot of coolant leaking under the engine.  A local mechanic (not a Subaru guy)looked it over with the engine off and thought he saw it dripping from the head on the drivers side. The nearest Subaru dealer is in Va. Beach, about 1 hour from me.  I take good care of my car and only use it on normal roads.

My questions are:

1.  Is this unusual for an Outback with this mileage?  Should I be checking something else before I drive it one hour to the dealer?

2.  Say it is leaking from the head.  Could you give me a ball park $$ figure?  I know there are variables but are we talking a thousand bucks or more?  Any other advice is welcome.

Thanks for your help.  George

Answer
Hello George,

To answer your question, it is very common for the 2001 - 2002 Legacy's and Outbacks to leak from the drivers side head gasket. To answer your other question, you car should be covered under Warranty. There is a 5yr/60k powertain warranty, in which the head gaskets are covered. I hope this helps you.

                     Thanks,
