Subaru Repair: Outback 2000, dual overhead cam, windshield washer

Question
Are the plugs on the 2000 Outback difficult to change?  ie. do I need special tools, are they very difficult to access?

Thanks.

Answer
Hello Sandro,

Depends on whether or not you have a phase 1 or phase 2 engine. Phase 1 is a dual overhead cam engine, and the plugs are on the side, in the middle of the valve covers. The phase 2 engine is a single overhead cam engine, and the plugs are more on the top of the heads. Another easier way to tell is, the phase 1 plug wires have a red end where they connect to the plugs. Phase 2 are black.

Phase 1 require platnum plugs, and are difficult to change. There isn't much room between the valve covers and the frame. You will need to put together a various assortment of adapters and swivels to get to these plugs.

Phase 2 are regular plugs, and are fairly easy to change. By removing the windshield washer jug, you can access the plugs on the drivers side. And removing the air box on the passenger side, you can access the RH plugs.  I hope this helps.
