Towing Issues: tow liens, tow company, storage costs

Question
yesterday i went to get my car re-register, they wouldn't let me get it done because they said i have a tow lien. well here is my question when my car was towed back in 2006, i was under the impression that it was stolen, and also made a police report. the police looked to see if it was towed and had no records of it being towed. almost a year later the police had called me and told me that they had found my car, and that it had gotten towed by towing company. i live in orlando florida... by this time it was too late they had already destroyed my car. i feel that the lien is unfair because i was never notified of the tow till almost a year later, plus i also had 3 cars registered under my name after the fact. also when i called to discuss the matter with the tow company they just said that well we sent you a certified letter.. which i never recieved. or i would of known about the tow, and would of gotten my car out of impound. i find this totally unfair. what can i do???

Answer
Well I have to say that from what you said you are trying to solve it. Talking to the tow company is the first step.

Now as to the letter they say they sent, I have to say that as a certified letter that will have a card on it where either shows attempts to deliver the letter or that you refused it. It will have your signature if you accepted it also.

I hate to say it, but I do not understand your comments about the vehicle being towed in 2006 and no one, police included could find it for a year. That does not matter if the vehicle was lost, stolen or what every, as you are the vehicle owner and are responsible for any towing and storage costs unless you had towing insurance coverage for the stolen vehicle which paid off the vehicle and then took over ownership of the vehicle.

Now not every tow company does do the license deal, but the ones who do are trying to recover what they are owed for providing the service as directed by law enforcement agencies.
Now how to work this out, is the question. I know you do not want this on your credit or license and other than pay it off (which you most likely do not want to do), I am not sure if Small Claims Court would solve this.

There is a link at the end of the answer where you can review the regulation they are using to do this.
