Towing Issues: Connecticut: Can I Abandon this Towed Car?, tow company, storage fees

Question
My car died on the highway and was towed by a private company to their establishment.  I told the operator when he picked it up that I didn't want the car.  Was told he couldn't tow it without the plates, so I left them on there.  I called three days later to find out about the car and was told someone would call me back.  No one ever got back to me as well as I lost the tow company's phone number.  Found the number 11 days later and now I'm being socked with tow AND storage fees.  I don't mind paying for the tow.  Can I just abandon the vehicle?  I am willing to send the title to the tow company.

Answer
The tow company can auction your vehicle and attempt collections if you do nothing but in most cases cost the tow company more than the vehicle was worth. It's best not to abandon the vehicle and figure out some solution with the tow company for proper disposal. Most tow companies are willing to discount some of the fees if a solution is resolved quickly. My suggestion is visiting the tow lot in person and speak with the manager or owner and settle the bill. Take the title, keys and retrieve your tags but be prepared to pay some of the tow bill. Also get a detailed receipt for everything. Good luck
