Towing Issues: Trailer Hitch on Jeep Wrangler, jeep wrangler, boston whaler

Question
I recently bought a 1993 Jeep Wrangler in excellent condition that I plan to use for towing a '17 Boston Whaler with over short distances. The Wrangler has this flat bar with 3 holes in it and the bar is attached to the frame. It definatley came from the factory and I have seen other Wranglers with the same bar. It looks like all you need to do is install and ball on it and it acts as your hitch which means I would only have to have the Jeep wired for lights. Is this correct? Or is that not the purpose of this bar? Thanks!!

Answer
I can't say since I haven't seen one personally but suggest a reputable trailer dealer in your area for further inspection. Most hitches have the weight limits stamped into them or at least a sticker with information. If you find the weight ratings on the hitch this doesn't suggest how much weight the vehicle can tow but informs how much weight the hitch can safely handle. I also suggest reviewing the towing limits for the Jeep. The last time I checked a Jeep Wrangler with a 4.0 only had a 2000 pound tow rating. I would review further but I really need all the specs such as transmission, axle ratio, etc. I believe the boat with trailer described would exceed that limit. Hope some of this information helped.
