Towing Issues: im being sued by towing company and did not own car at the time., registration laws, towing company

i gave a car to a friend and he sold it to someone who then abandoned the car but did not change the title. unfortunantly i did not have a bill of sale and the friend did not get a bill of sale for the car either. how do i prove that i did not own the car at the time? the friend has now moved on and i cannot locate him, but i do have witnesses who were thier at the time i gave the car to the friend. will this help me? i didn't know that i was suppose to notify the dmv at the time either.
