Towing Issues: Towing with a dolly, tow dollies, ford econoline

Question
I have a 1998 Ford Econoline Club Wagon with a frame hitch (U-Haul).  I need to tow a 1987 Corvette (rear wheel drive) for 530 miles - from Atlanta, GA to Sarasota, FL.  I am considering a rented tow dolly to do the job.  All of the tow dollies I have researched say the front wheels need to be on the dolly.  However, I have seen many vehicles on the interstates that I know are rear wheel drive, being towed on dollies backwards - with the rear wheels on the dolly.  Is it safe to do this?  It sure would make life easier for me as there is no way to get under a Vette to take off the driveshaft without a lot, a LOT of hassel. any safe words of wisdom Richard?

Answer
You are correct in the fact that many vehicles are "dollied" backwards...

Now I know that U-Haul and others suggest it is towed front up and I am not sure why other than for the safety of not having to secure the steering wheel so it would travel in a straight line.  Other reason is that many vehicles have air dams and spoilers on the front which possibly be damaged if towed backwards, so that is maybe why they suggest frontwards...

I would check out the reasons for it via the U-Haul web site or talk to U-Haul (I would pick a different store if you are going to talk and then rent later, so that they do not know you are smarter and going to tow it backwards than the store you are going to rent from)

Good luck and hope this helps
