Towing Issues: Roadside service, warning triangles, tow truck driver

Question
What is the law concerning where I tow truck driver is allowed/supposed to park on a public street while doing a jump start as a service call in California?

Am I correct in thinking that the law states something like, oncoming traffic must move over one lane away from the tow truck? Kinda like when police & EMS are on the roadside?

A policeman told me that I didn't have a right to be in the street! I told him I was working & showed him my light bar with the arrow & hazards on. He said I should have cones, flares or warning triangles. He said my light bar doesn't count! Please tell me the what the law states. Thank you kindly.

Answer
I'll been there myself! I would have to refer you to your state towing association for the correct answer. Here's the link http://www.ctta.com/ for your towing association. I also found this link http://dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/vc/tocd11c10a1.htm and you may find the answer with some digging.

I do understand your view and the officer's view but if the officer tells you to do something it's usually in your best interest. Here in VA we are required to drop three cones or triangles or pop three flares (depending on conditions) if blocking a travel lane without assistance, meaning traffic controllers or law enforcement. In my opinion, if someone ran into the back of your truck, it would be better if you had taken the extra precautions and definitely helps your case if you had to explain it to a judge.

Here is a link for the move over law in CA but it's focused on highway use.
