Towing Issues: trying to get my car back, crimes and punishments, proper paperwork

Question
I am from NH and NH does not require car insurance if you OWN your vehicle. I was visiting in Brooklyn NY for labor day and my car was towed, they will not give me my vehicle without my insurance card, I do not have insurance because I own my car. I was only there for 1 day they refuse to give me my car. Is this legal? I am stranded in New York

Answer
Not sure what to advise here on this one... I know what you are saying and my guess would be that "you have to obey the laws in the area which you are traveling in" which I know is not much of an answer.

But I really have not heard of this kind of issue but in reading the information from a quick web search I see that they have a minimum financial responsibility requirement which seems (to me) to be what New York is looking for proof of...

New Hampshire law does not require you to have automobile insurance. However, you must satisfy the NH Financial Responsibility requirements to operate a vehicle in New Hampshire. These minimum limits are 25/50/25: bodily injury of $25,000 per person; $50,000 for 2 or more persons; and Property Damage of $25,000. A $75,000 single limit policy will also satisfy the minimum requirement.

Legal or not in your eyes, I know if I go to California where the speed limit is different from here in Alabama for Semi trucks I have to obey the laws for California...  I can not break the laws there and say that my laws are the only ones we follow... Look at all the differences in crimes and punishments for countries in the middle east verses the United States...

Hope this helps but I only can see you having to provide the proper paperwork to NY before you get the vehicle back. And yes the price goes up each day due to storage..
