Volvo Repair: Front suspension, sway bar link, channel lock pliers

Question
Hi Regis
I have an intermittent clonking noise that seems to come from the left front suspension of my 1999 S70 T5. It is heard when riding over bumps and is sometimes worse than other times.
I have checked the wheel bearing (no play) and all visible suspension rubber components (No problems).  I suspect it may be the top suspension mounting.  In order to remove the strut to inspect it, do I need to compress the spring or can I remove it without compressing it.
Alternatively, do you have any suggestion as to what could be causing the noise?
Thank you
Rodney

Answer
it could be the strut mount or sway bar link rod.probably a link rod they are more comon.to check the strut you can remove the coveon the top nut if it has one and try turning the nut to tighten it.if it is tight and does not spin the mount is ok if the mount is broken it will spin when turned with even a pair of channel lock pliers.
