Towing Issues: TOWING ISSUES, tow company, tax receipt

Question
I CAR WAS TOWED AFTER AN ACCIDENT. I CAN'T AFFORD TO PAY AND ITS TOTALED..BUT THEY WON'T LET ME TAKE MY TAG.. IS THIS ALLOWED..I NEED THAT TAG.. THANKS

Answer
aahh lets see if I can answer this....   I got no idea what state you are in, and it does make a difference..

Lets see you want the tag so you can put it on another vehicle correct ?

What do you think the tow company should do with "YOUR TOTALED VEHICLE"
Are you willing to pay them for the services they provided to protect your vehicle from further damage, and what about removing it from the accident location?

Now on to the tag, I know that in some states, the tag is not unique to the vehicle and as such you can take it off and place it on another vehicle and then tell DMV...

But in some states, the tag is more a tax receipt and as such is stuck with the vehicle..

Ok now the tow company not releasing the tag (again no real answer cause I do not know the state involved), the vehicle is totaled and worth may $50.00 at the wrecking yard and you want to take the tag... Well its the only thing of value the tow company has, and as such they are trying to recover any money they can to cover the expenses they have...

So  I really have to ask, you think that its fair to "DUMP" on the tow company who is a private business not a tax payer supported organization like the police and fire department.
