Towing Issues: Placing a Tow Away Sign in a Private Parking Lot, nassau county new york, tow companies

Question
My company is located in NAssau County, New York and would like to place signs on the wall in front of some of our parking spots to prevent non-employees from parking and saying that violaters will be towed.  We are tenants in the building.  What kind of regulations are we to abide by? Is this controlled by the Dept of Transportation or something else?

Any information you can give is appreciated!
THanks,
Diana

Answer
Well, since Nassau county covers a big chunk of Long Island you might have some city laws that I could not provide specific answers to..

But the State does have regulations as to the size of the signs, wording of them and posting requirements..
Now that said, on the the legal part..

As a tenant (are you the only one in the building or you share it with others, as that is a key to answers..

In a nut shell, only the property owner - manager of the property can sign contracts and authorizations for removal with tow companies. This kind of prevents the people from fighting and having other tenants vehicles removed.

But if you are the sole tenant and user of the parking lot (by rental contract) then you should be able to have a towing company come in and post the signs..

Check out the companies in the area, and ask them about the specific laws for your City, as it would not be good to have them try to follow laws from the town next door, or such.
Most tow companies will be honest and do a good job for you, but if you get any hints or feelings that something is not right, then find someone else...
Removal of vehicles from parking lots always creates problems and you want to avoid more headache than you have now.

Check with the local police as they will also be able to provide you with the laws (or point you the right way) and maybe suggest a few good companies.
