Towing Issues: What Gear - Vehicle Being Towed, nissan pickup, towbar

What gear should the towed vehicle be in when being towed by another vehicle (using a towbar...not sure if I've used the correct term but all 4 wheels of the towed vehicle will be on the ground)
I'm told if it's manual, then it's neutral.  If it's automatic, it needs to have a special setup to disengage the gear.  Also, does distance to be towed also factor in?  Please advise.  Being towed is a small nissan pickup, manual xmission.  don't know the year.  Any insight is appreciated.  THANX!

yes  neutral is the best position to use, but if you really want to be sure and not cause any damage to the transmission, you can remove the driveline and then it will not matter...

Distance does come into play with certain vehicles as some have limits as to how far or how fast they can be towed with out causing damages...
