Towing Issues: jump start, bad car, click sound

Question
I tried unsuccessfully to jumpstart my friend's car using the following method: Connect positive to positive. Turn on ignition in good car, wait 3 mins,  turn on ignition in bad car, remove cables in reverse order, let run about 5 mins. Then remove ignition key.

When I switched on the good car, the bad car's engine started and continued running. Then I removed the cables, and removed the ignition key from the bad car. When I tried to switch on the bad car, the engine chugged a bit, then the key just gave a click sound, no engine revving up. Question: Should I have driven the bad car before removing the ignition key? Thank you.

Answer
I am lost here, and I think I understand the question ...

You did a jump start (temporary fix) and the vehicle would not start after you let it run for about 5 minutes..

Charging a dead battery (something had to cause it, lights left on, bad charging system, or even a bad or old battery) takes from 15 to 45 minutes to regain somewhat close to normal battery charge...

Clicking sounds are usually the starter trying to start and they sound like a series of rapid clicks,  one solid click usually indicates that the starter might have a problem.
