Towing Issues: towing a car behind a pick-up truck, tow dolly, toyota corolla

Question
Hi Richard, I'm at ends trying to decide the best way to get my 2nd vehicle to North Carolina from California and I will not be taking the most direct route. I have a 07 Silverado 1500 with a 5000lb towing capacity. My other car is a 05 Toyota Corolla with no modifications. I've been looking at truck carrier companies (pricing just under a $1000), flat trailer towing (renting - $800), dolly towing (renting - $500), and just flying back and driving the vehicle straight across (3 days time at approx $600). I would like to go the least expensive way without causing any damage to my Corolla. Can you please assist.

Answer
Well in defense of the trucking company doing the move for you, I have to say that any time the vehicle is out of your control then you run the risk of having something happen.. (you know how Murphys law works)

The tow dolly would be a good method to use, as its also lighter than the trailer. All the stuff is going to add up...
Another factor to figure in, is the fuel mileage of the Chev will be a bit lower when towing the vehicle, and its harder to get into and out of places while in tow...  You will still have food, fuel and motel fees to consider in addition to the rental of the trailer or dolly.

The fly and drive method is good, but you will have airfare, fuel, food, motels to also consider

It's a great toss up question to try to answer and I wish you luck in the move which ever way you decide to do it..

Just do it the way that you are most comfortable with, and that should work out.   Good luck
