Towing Issues: tow dolly vs. car carrier, low profile tires, tow dollys

Question
QUESTION: Hi Richard,
I have a 1992 Acura Legend that I am transporting from Illinois to California. It is front wheel drive of course, and I see that tow dollys are "recommended". Is a car carrier where the car is totally off the ground not better anyway? It is $200 more for the car carrier, and if it is better, I will just do that. But if there are real advantages to the tow dolly, I would consider doing that as well.

Thanks,

ANSWER: Well the best chances for the least possibility of damage is for the vehicle to be all the way off the ground. So a car trailer would be best choice here.
Only major issues with either would be if the vehicle has been modified in any manner. Lowered suspension, Low profile tires, ground effects spoilers and panels, or extra special exhaust systems all will be an issue with either method of towing.

Now the advantages of the dolly over the trailer is mainly weight of the unit, which will affect the total combination of the tow unit, the tow dolly or trailer, the Acura, and if you are moving all the stuff you are taking with you.

Either method will work, just keep in mind that with each of them the vehicle has to go up a ramp and that can cause damage if it has modifications that will get in the way.

QUESTION: Thanks. No modifications.
So the trailer weighs more and that just adds to my total weight? So I can expect lower mileage? I will be moving all my stuff with the car (planning to rent the 22' Diesel truck from Penske.

Answer
OK, the diesel truck will have a mileage which will be close loaded or empty.. Its just that way with that series of truck and engines.. Yes the weight of the truck, trailer and Acura and even all the belongings all add up..

Just remember on thing also, most people are not used to driving heavy vehicles and things with trailers... Be careful and drive defensively ..
