Towing Issues: Towing fees, towing companies, towing company

Question
My SUV was towed for being parked in an apartment complex behind a night club while I was in the club. It was towed after midnight on Saturday night. I picked it up at 1:00pm on Sunday (the next day). So my truck was there less than 12 hours. The towing company charged me $120 for towing plus $15 for an extra day. The girl who answered the phone said they can charge for an extra day if the vehicle is in their posession after 6 hours. Is this true? I'm in Florida if that matters.

Answer
Well depending on the city (some have more regulations than the state does on this issue) you will have storage starting the moment it gets to the yard, some have 1 hr, or 12 hrs or 24 hours of a grace period (again depends on the city rules).  But if what you say, then yeah it looks legal... Most towing services (even though they offer 24 hour towing) have regular business hours like 8 to 5 Monday to Friday, (every try to get your banker to come in on Sunday morning and do the banking business INSIDE the bank??)

In most cases there is an "afterhours release fee" or "gate fee" for the people who want to get the vehicles at times other than normal business hours..

The extra day (also called storage), you paid is basically ground rental fees for storing, insuring and protecting your vehicle while its in the towing companies control and possession.  So I am going to say, from the sounds of this, it was legal to collect the fee...

It sounds as if the whole tow was legal, as you were not even parked in the business (club) you were a customer of and were taking up a space at an apartment where someone pays for the privilege to park at..

Sorry for the answer you most likely did not want to hear, but on the bright side, the fees that you mentioned are lower than what it usually is for the service.. This is my experience and knowledge there on the the fees..  You got off cheap in my mind..
