Towing Issues: towing generator trailers, generator trailers, pintle hook

Question
I work for NYC and in the process of purchasing 24' generator trailers with a pintle hook and a weight of 21,000 LBS. I am looking to purchase vehicles that are capable of towing these trailers with the smallest length available so that the total length is not restrictive and hard to maneuver. What are my options? Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

Answer
Jim,

I would be tempted to mount the generators directly to the decks of the trucks.  However I understand this doesn't necessarily suit your needs (for instance if the gens need to be left for a period while the trucks work elsewhere).

I am partial to the International line of trucks and a look at some of their new 'XT' line at SEMA last year was awe inspiring.  While the 'XT' line may be a little pricey if you are looking for a bare bones workhorse, there are many other options out there from International, KW and many more manus.

I suggest looking at a few of the lines on the Internet and then talking to some local truck dealers to see what is prevalent in your area.  Let's not forget; once you get these things, they are going to need repair and replacement parts.  It's not always convenient to order the parts in from the other side of the country or from another country.

Good luck,
