QuestionI would like to tow a 1992 Firebird with a 2005 Ford Ranger. When renting a dolly, Uhaul says it may not be compatible with the Ranger. Penske says they dont have a dolly that will work with a Ranger.
Are they just being over cautious? Is there a significant clearence issue when using a Ranger? Do you have any suggestions?
Thank you.
AnswerThe biggest hitch I carry for the Ford Ranger is rated at 4,000 lbs weight carrying.
The 1992 Pontiac Firebird weighs between 3180# and 3220# dry. Add the weight of the dolly at 500-800# and you are right at the limit of the hitch. I think you will find your maximum towing capacity of the truck will be 2260# for the 4cyl, 2300-2640# for the 3.0L V6, and 3100-5740# for the 4.0L V6. Dependant upon the body style and the transmission.
Even if the truck and hitch are rated high enough, a dolly doesn't tow the same as a trailer. It isn't as bad as a tow bar, but it will still try to push the truck around.
I cannot reccommend it, however; your mileage may vary.
If the truck is in one of the small categories that rate it high enough and you've got a strong enough hitch, I still don't reccommend it, but it is possible. Although it won't be the best idea for a long trip (lots of load on the truck for a long time will wear it, and you, out very quickly).
Good luck,
