Towing Issues: Dingy towing, dingy towing, diesel motorhome

Question
I have a 2001 Dodge Dakota with a towing package that I tow behind a 40' diesel motorhome.  The Dakota has recently had intermittent starting problems.  I replaced the batteries and check other issues but cannot find the source of the problem.   Also, after long towing trips we can smell burning rubber or oil smell after starting the dakota.  This lasts for a short time and then goes away until the next time we tow.  Are either of these issues something you know to be caused by us towing the dakota.

Answer
DogHauler,

I am a little unsure exactly what's going on.  If the Dakota is having starting problems, and you replaced the battery (singular) does that mean that you were having a problem with the battery dying?  If the battery is good and it still won't start, it could be caused by so many things, I can't even begin to guess.  If you have been towing in the past without problems, I would check out the truck on it's own.  If it has a dead battery when you arrive at your destination under tow, check to make sure you are putting the key in the proper position (off but unlocked).

As for the smell of oil, I haven't heard of this situation but I wouldn't totally discount it either.  I would have the drivetrain checked out for any leaks or signs of burnt fluid.  You may have a problem developing.

Good luck,
