Towing Issues: flat towing a jeep wrangler unlimited with automatic transmission, tow truck drivers, jeep wrangler
QuestionI will be flat towing my 2005 jeep wrangler unlimited automatic transmission 1100 miles each way in the next few weeks. I understand putting the T case into neutral, but do I put the transmission in drive? I've heard so many different answers, I'm a little confused by all the jeep forums I read regarding lubrication etc. Help !
Answersorry but I am always confussed by towing methods for jeeps. They seem to have things which are totally differant from anyone else.
We as Tow truck drivers, prefer to tow the vehicle in a manner which prevents any chance of damage to the transmission .
Now that means we would put it up on a trailer so no wheels will be on the ground and if not then it would be lifted at one end (like a tow dolly) and the driveline would be removed at the other end to eliminate the potential for transmisson damage.
I do know that for RV owners who tow Jeeps behind the vehicle they have either a transmission disconnect device to prevent damage from possibly happening, but I am not familar with them at all.
I just know what we do when we tow them for breakdowns, accidents or tow aways.
Sorry for the generalized vague answer..
