Towing Issues: Car Towing, apartment houses, legal answer

Question
Thank you for your answer.  What would you suggest doing to avoid this from happening in the future?  Inform our landlord when we go on vacation?  Is it a general policy to inform your landlord when you go away?

Question -
My sister recently got her car towed from the parking lot of the building that where we rent a townhouse.  We were on vacation last week and on Wednesday the landlord had the parking lot paved.  There was a message on our answering machine that said if the vehicle isn't removed it would be towed.  The message was dated the same day as the car was towed.  We received no notice in advanced saying that they were going to pave the parking lot.  Is this legal?

Answer -
Well,  hate to say it but it sounds like they car got towed becuase of the paving job.  Some times the management of apartment houses have a bit of warning which they can pass on.  Other times as a part of a large chain of complexes they kind of get thrown under the bus..

This sounds like they had no notice of it happening also.

Hate to say it but the vacation you were on did not help any..  If you were home you could of moved the car...
I hope that you might be able to talk to the management and see if they MIGHT HELP get it out..

Hard to say if they will.. I think its an unfortunate think which happened though.

Answer
well as a general practical answer it would be to notify the landlords.   This is good for 2 reasons..One your car would not be towed if needed unless it was for an emergency. Also they would be watching the apartment to make sure someone does not break in or something happens to it..
