Toyota Repair: 89 4x4 V6 starter replacement, inner fender, cable clamp

Question
Do you have some helpful hints on how to get the starter out of my '89 SR5 V6 4x4?  (I've disassembled the truck to the bare frame 10 years ago and restored it so I know the vehicle well). Thanks

Answer
It's a little difficult but can be done, the first thing I always did when replacing these starters is to remove the metal rock shield under the engine, lift it up and remove the right front wheel, remove the rubber cover and the 10mm bolts that attach the metal shield in the inner fender, disconnect the battery, disconnect the electrical connector and cable from the starter, remove the 10mm bolt that holds the cable clamp to the frame and get the cable out of the way, bend the inner fender metal up as much as possible (you can bend it back later) remove both the 14mm lower bolt and the upper nut, remove the small heat shield on the exhaust manifold, the starter will come out through the opening if turned just the right way.
