Toyota Repair: 91 Tercel auto trans, chilton manuals, salvage yard

Question
Ted,
I have (2)questions. First, when buying a salvage yard tranny (126,000 miles) that has been sitting around for several years- should filter, seals and gaskets be the only things to replace prior to adding new fluid?
Also, I would like to remove my tranny and install said tranny myself (using both Haynes\Chilton manuals)- is there any tips you could give me relating to the torque converter or other possible component oversights.

Answer
It would be a good idea to replace the transpan gasket and the drive axle seals before installation. The only caution I have for you is to make sure the torque converter is all the way on the splines inside the bellhousing, if it's not the transmission oil pump will be damaged when tightening the bellhousing to the engine.
