Toyota Repair: Toyota Camry 93 headgasket replacement, toyota camry, head gasket

Question
Hi Ted,
I have a Toyota Camry 93, 4 cylinder, auto transmission.  Engine has been rebuilt.  I loaned my car to a friend and she drove it, overheated, and the car died.  I towed it home and find out that a lot of coolant go to the oil pan.  Would you please give me some direction on how to replace the head gasket? What should I watch out for? I am nervous about the cams line up before removing it? In the past, I was able to replace (3) broken timing belts, learned from your instruction with no issue.  I also have a Hayes annual. My question is what should I watch out for? What is the most important step? May I use old bolts? Thanks.

Answer
The old bolts can be re used as long as you are able to torque them to specifications. One of the cams, I think it's the intke, has a spring loaded gear that needs to be locked with a small bolt before removing it, your manual should tell you about this, there are sometimes conflicting instructions of lining up the two cams with each other, if you need help with this let me know. Otherwise it's pretty straightforeward. You may want to have the head checked for warpage and make sure the cylinder walls didn't get damaged from overheating and more important find the cause for the overheating.
