Toyota Repair: RE: Toyota Remote Control Programming, jumper wire, toyota camry

Question
QUESTION: Hi,  I have a 1999 Toyota Camry LE that I just bought.  It didn't come with a remote so I purchased one from ebay. I have dowloaded Manufacturer Instructions on how to program it but I'm confused about one thing. On the instructions it says locate and disconnect the Mirror Control Switch from the vehicle harness.  What is the vehicle harness?? Is it the square plate that says mirror? or is it the small panel that holds this square plate? Also,  how do I remove the harness?  Thank you, Mark

ANSWER: All you have to do is to remove the electrical connector from the mirror control switch, that's the harness they are talking about. The mirror switch may be mounted in the window master control switch in the left armrest.

QUESTION: Hi,  Here's the picture of the remote. Thank you for the help.  Mark

Answer
That remote is actually for the factory installed 1995-97 model, the 1997-99 models had lock/unlock and a "panic" button on the front so I'm not even sure if it will work, it does use the jumper wire procedure on the left window switch, you can try doing that and see, there is also a chance that it didn't have the factory installed system, they were installed in all XLE and some LE models, since yours is an LE it could have the dealer installed or port installed system which will also have the toyota logo but will be completely different requiring a different programming procedure. I can email the instructions I have for this remote, it's factory original copy, since you already have the remote it's worth a try. There is a way to find out if it has the dealer installed system, it will have a small electronic control module under the dash to the left of the steering column, it will be silver colored and say "theft deterrent/keyless entry ecu" on it, this is where it's supposed to be, the problem is some installers put them wherever they felt like so it may be under the driver's seat carpet or under the console.
