Toyota Repair: 1990 Toyota 4Runner 3.0L V6 No spark after replacing water pump, toyota 4runner, diagnostic check

Question
I replaced the timing belt and water pump on my 1990 Toyota 4Runner 3.0L V6 A/T. After triple-checking the timing, and re-assembling, I can't get it to start. It cranks and acts like it wants to start, but just won't give it up! There is no spark. I've replaced the rotor, the distributor cap is 1 year old and free from carbon tracks, corrosion, etc. I hesitate to replace the igniter/ignition coil because I really do not believe that to be the problem. Before changing the timing belt and water pump, the ignition process was tip-top. What am i missing? One person suggested it could be a ground wire problem. Are there any ground wires in the vicinity of the work previously described?

Answer
I don't remember any ground wires being in that area that could be off, have you rechecked the distributor timing, make sure the rotor points to where the #1 cylinder contact in the cap is. Check to see if there are any trouble codes to make sure the rpm signals from the distributor are there, open the diagnostic check connector and with the key on put a jumper between TE1 and E1 and count the number of times the check engine light blinks, it will be two digit number, 2 blinks followed by 4 would be code 24 and so on.
