Toyota Repair: engine burning excessive oil, excessive oil consumption, corollas

Question
i own a 2000 corolla, the car was taken to the dealer for a check engine light, the repair facility told me the code indicated the engine needs to be replaced, or rebuild the lower end.the price for both is aound 3000.00. I feel if i were to purchase a used engine i might end up where i am now. then i went on-line and found over 3000 corollas with the same problem. Is there a recall on these models that i may have missed? the car has 148,000 on it and still runs ok. What should i do next?

Answer
To my knowledge, toyota had never issued a service campaign/recall for excessive oil consumption for this engine although there were known issues mostly caused by incorrect maintenance or lack thereof. Before spending al lot of money can you answer a few questions for me?
Does the engine make any abnormal noise?
Is there any blue smoke from the exhaust?
What was the trouble code that made the dealer say it needs an engine?
Is the engine using excessive oil, has in been tested for oil consumption?
