Toyota Repair: Low Engine Oil, powertrain warranty, toyota matrix

Question
The last 24 hours have been nightmarish....

I have a new 2009 Toyota Matrix (1500 miles on the odo) that I attempted to give an oil change (3+ months since last change). The oil filter is of the type that comes with a paper filter and an O-ring. After the oil/filter change, I drove 3 miles round trip (speed ranged from 25-50mph) and experienced engine clicks and taps (sounded like a diesel truck), and the oil light coming on intermittently. When I returned, I saw a lot of oil on the road where I was previously parked. After clean-up, I had the car towed to the local mechanic who found that the O-ring on the filter cover was positioned too far back. So this is what caused the loss of oil, caused the oil light to blink, caused the tractor trailer noises, and caused me to feel like an ass. The mechanic put a new filter on, put new oil in, and the car SEEMS to run fine, just like it did 48 hours ago: quiet, clean, no lights, no clicks, nothing.
   So here's my question.
How badly do you think I damaged my new car's engine in those 3 miles? How resilient are these engine parts? Is my new car doomed to seize-up and die on me within the next few weeks of driving? Or is it possible for me to still enjoy many more years of driving this car despite what happened the past 24 hours? I'm afraid to take it to Toyota because I'm afraid they will say I need a new engine. Heck, I can barely afford diagnostics right now.

Thanks in advance.

Answer
Since there are no noises now it seems that you may have caught the problem just in time, I have no way of knowing whether there is any permenent damage but I would say probably none. The powertrain warranty is 5yrs/60,000 miles, what I would suggest to you is to have the next oil changes and required services done at the toyota dealer just in case something does go wrong down the road, doing so will keep your powertrain warranty in effect.
