Toyota Repair: Toyota Camry V6 transmission, toyota camry v6, toyota camry

Question
My 1994 Camry V6 has 200,000 miles on it and needs a new transmission. It was previously owned by my mother and before that my brother. The mechanic said it's a nice car and in good shape. He also said that if it was a four cylinder model he would not recommend spending the $2600 to replace the transmission(as the 4 cylinder has a tendency to throw a rod at high mileage), but that in a V6 it is worth it, that we should probably get a few more years out of the car. Do you agree with this assessment, that at 200,000 miles the V6 is more likely to continue running than the 4 cylinder?

Answer
No I don't agree with that, I have never heard of the 4 cylinder engine to have a tendency to have connecting rod bearing failure, with proper maintenance, ie: regular oil changes the 4 cylinder engine will probably outlast the V-6 or at least last as long. At higher mileage keeping the oil clean becomes critical for any engine as parts start to wear, it's not uncommon to get 275,000 miles out of these engines. Replacing the transmission at $2600 is expensive so keep in mind that there may be other repairs necessary as mileage increases whether it's a 4 cylinder or V-6.
