Toyota Repair: diagnostics on a 91 pick toyta pick up, genisys scan tool, diagnostic cable

i have a genisys scan tool and they do not make a diagnostic cable to fit pre 93 toyotas are they capable of on board diagnosis  they say i can only short the pins of the connector

That is correct. You need to diagnose through the check connector under the hood. If your check engine light is on, connect the "TE1/E1" with the wire and pins, then turn the ignition key to the "on" position. write down the code/codes and let me know what they are and I can tell which circuit is in question.
