Toyota Repair: A/T oil tep light & battery light, caldina, oil temp

Question
Hello Ted

I have a 1999 Caldina GT-T.  Today two lights have come on the A/T oil temp light in one panel and the battery light in the other.

What do I need to do to fix this?

Thanks.

Gowan

Answer
First check the transmission fluid level and check the condition of the fluid, it may need to be changed or the transmission completely flushed and the fluid replaced, also be sure the correct fluid is used for this model/year, the battery light usually turns on if the alternator is not charging sufficiently, the alternator may need to be replaced but before doing so I would recommend having the output tested with the engine running at idle and at about 2000 rpm under a load condition, the alternator should put out about 60amps at 13v or more under load.
