Toyota Repair: intermittent wipers, intermittent wipers, dashboard lights

I have an 85 camry that has two problems. The intermittent wipers do not work and the dashboard lights usually don't work. Sometimes the dash will light up and the variable reostat seems to work fine and then all the lights in the dash go out. I replaced the combinations switch and still have the same problem. Any ideas

There is a poor connection somewhere. This will happen on a 24 year old car. You need to spend some time with a schematic in the back of a Chiltons or Haynes repair manual. Check all connections from the combination switch backwards under steering column, pull them apart and plug in again. The dash light dimmer should be replaced.
